Debt
There are a wide
range of reasons why you may find yourself unable to pay your debts:
for example you may have experienced redundancy; problems with benefits;
bereavement; separation; divorce; illness or, quite simply, you
find that you have over-commited to credit cards and bank loans.
Debt can be one of
the most stressful things that you may experience. Not only that,
it can have serious consequences such as the disconnection of essential
services including gas and electricity, the loss of your home, action
by bailiffs and, in some circumstances - such as with arrears of
council tax or fines - imprisonment. |
We offer a
non-judgemental, confidential and practical approach to helping you with
your money problems. We can advise and assist you on the legal options
that you may have or on proceedings that might be taken against you, such
as county court claims, administration orders and bankruptcy. Our advice
does not stop there: we will take the time to look at your financial position
in detail and offer practical advice, for example, on ways you may be
able to increase your income or decrease your expenses. We can also negotiate
with creditors on your behalf.
Community Legal Service funding
is available for eligible clients to cover all aspects of debt advice.
To help us advise you as quickly
and accurately as possible at your first appointment, please try to bring
with you all relevant papers. These may include -
- Details of your debts (eg
statements, letters, fines etc.)
- Full details
of your household income (benefits, wage slips etc.)
- Bank details
- Information about where
you live (tenancy agreements, rent books, mortgage accounts etc)
- Details of savings and assets
- Identification (eg driving
licence, passport, utility bills etc)
